Dr Steve Raymond is a specialist gynaecologist and ultrasonologist who has been in practice in Newcastle since 1987. He ceased obstetric practice in 2001 to focus on infertility practice and to assist with the establishment of Hunter IVF.

Born in Mauritius, Dr Raymond emigrated to Australia in 1968. He graduated from the University of Sydney in 1978. He completed specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Newcastle before spending two years in advanced training in Fetal Maternal Medicine and Ultrasound at the Queen Mothers’ Hospital in Glasgow, Scotland.

Dr Raymond returned to practice as a specialist in Newcastle in 1987. He was appointed as Lecturer in Reproductive Medicine at the University of Newcastle spending 4 years researching the causes and treatment of recurrent miscarriage. He quickly established a busy specialist practice in Obstetrics and Gynaecology as well as Infertility including IVF at the then Lingard Fertility Centre.

After helping to establish the first Prenatal and Ultrasound Fetal Diagnostic Unit in the Newcastle region, Dr Raymond was the first to perform fetal invasive procedures such as CVS and Cordocentesis. He is still involved in the training of doctors at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

With more than 25 years experience in the management of obstetric and gynaecological conditions Dr Raymond’s areas of interest and expertise include:

• Prenatal diagnosis including invasive testing such as CVS and Amniocentesis
• Diagnostic ultrasound in obstetrics, gynaecology and infertility
• Treatment for male and female infertility including IVF
• Gynaecology including advanced laparoscopic surgery especially for endometriosis

In addition to his involvement with Hunter IVF, Dr Raymond is a visiting gynaecologist at Newcastle Private, John Hunter and Belmont Hospitals. He has published and presented numerous scientific papers both in Australia and overseas.
